Celebrate Recreation Month

Did you know that June is Recreation Month? See the menu below for a list of Recreation Month celebrations in communities across the municipality. 

We'll keep the fun going by highlighting some of our favourite programs all month long. Our Recreation Month spotlight series will showcase the wide array of programs and activities we have to offer for all ages.

Recreation Month Activities 

Recreation Day events and activities originally planned for June 3 have been rescheduled to take place throughout the month of June. Details on events in various locations will be added below as information becomes available.

Power House Youth Centre | June 17

Join us at the Power House Youth Centre on June 17 between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for free Rec Day activities. All youth aged 13-24 are welcome. 

Emera Oval | June 17

Join us at the Emera Oval on June 17 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for free Rec Day activities including:

  • Three large inflatables from Glow Promotions
  • Photo Booth
  • Glitter Tattoo Artist
  • Snow Cones (up to 600)
  • Popcorn (up to 600)
  • Sport Ball demonstrations
  • Equipment demonstrations by Inclusion Staff Staff in Superhero Costumes

Recreation Month Spotlight Series

Throughout June, we'll be adding featured programs to our spotlight series below. See full program details and register online at halifax.ca/myREC, or click on the course codes below as programs are added.

Archery 

Did you know we offer archery programs? Join us over the fall, winter and spring at the Citadel Community Centre for beginner and returning lessons. 

Beginners Archery (ages 10-15): Participants learn archery with a focus on safety, responsibility, and self-discipline. Participants learn the fundaments of shooting as laid out by the National Archery in Schools Program through games and activities. This class is heavily structured and lesson oriented.

Returners Archery (ages 10-15): Participants refine skills learned in the Beginners Archery Class through games, and in-class competitions. This class is more casual and is games oriented. (Completion of Beginners Class required)

Adult Archery (16+):
Similar to the Returners class; casual with a focus on safety, archery skills, and games.

Summer Day Camps at the new Halifax Common Aquatic Facility

We're excited to introduce summer day camps at the new Halifax Common Aquatic Facility in July and August for kids 8-11. Campers will participate in a variety of age-appropriate activities which include active games, sports, cooperative games, crafts as well as lots of swimming and outdoor play.

Ballroom Dancing at the Gordon R Snow Community Centre

Beginning in January 2024, check out our ballroom dancing programs at the Gordon R Snow Community Centre

Participants learn a variety of dances including Salsa, Bachata, Merengue and Jive. Basic patterns of each dance are taught and cover rhythm count, lead and follow. Learn more by visiting halifax.ca/myrec.

Junior Scientist

Explore and discover various aspects of science through discovery and experiments with our Jr. Scientist program at the Chocolate Lake Community Centre this fall, winter and spring. Learn more by visiting halifax.ca/myrec or chat with our front desk staff.

Pottery 

Join us for a fun introduction to pottery for children and youth aged 9-13 at the St. Andrew's Community Centre this fall. The class is focused on hand building, and all materials are included. Lean more by visiting halifax.ca/myrec or chat with our front desk staff.

Pickleball

Join us for a new Pickleball program at the Citadel Community Centre this fall. Pickleball is a racket/paddle sport that incorporates elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong and is played by people of all ages and skill levels.

The game is easy for beginners to learn and as your skills progress, the game picks up speed and action. This program is non-instructional. Experienced players assist the new players with technique and the rules of the game.

Restorative Yoga

Join us for restorative yoga at the Cole Harbour Recreation Centre this fall. 

Restorative yoga is a passive, meditative form of yoga that allows you to focus on your breath while releasing tension in your body. Unlike other forms of yoga, restorative yoga requires you to hold asanas or poses for an extended length of time, typically five minutes or more.

Cardio Bootcamp and yoga

Join us for cardio bootcamp and yoga classes through the Lakeside Community Centre this summer.

These programs are offered in the rural community of Glen Margaret and are held at the William Black United Church Hall.
