Penhorn Lake Naturalization Project

On May 13-16, 2025, residents participated in a planting workshop along Penhorn Lake’s shoreline. The purpose of this naturalization project, and the larger Naturalization Strategy, is to support human use of municipal parks while maintaining ecological resilience.

The naturalization at Penhorn Lake Beach aimed to:

  • stabilize the shoreline;
  • support a variety of pollinators and bird species;
  • enhance the freshwater ecosystem; and,
  • improve local water quality.

The planting workshop is connected with the municipality’s naturalization efforts, which takes a landscape management approach to improve biodiversity and make urban spaces more resilient.

The municipality partnered with Healing Nature Heal to facilitate the planting workshop, using nature-based solutions to create a healthier shoreline.
