Project overview
The Halifax Regional Municipality is continuing necessary infrastructure improvements to the Lucasville Road bridge, located near Hefler Lane. The first phase of this work took place during the 2024 construction season. This final phase of construction work will complete the recapitalization of the bridge, ensuring a safer and longer-lasting structure for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Upgrades to the bridge include:
- installing new barriers and a wider sidewalk to improve pedestrian use;
- removal of the expansion joints to reduce future maintenance; and
- repaving of Lucasville Road on the bridge and bridge approaches.
The Lucasville Road bridge upgrade project is a Council-approved investment under the municipality’s Capital Plan. It supports Action 57 of the Integrated Mobility Plan (IMP), which guides investment in active transportation, transit, roadway infrastructure and transportation demand management across the Halifax region. This action focuses on maintaining existing transportation assets in a state of good repair to ensure public safety and long-term efficiency.
Completion of this project also aligns with the goals of the Halifax Municipal Planning Strategy, the municipality’s Active Transportation Priorities Plan and the Road Safety Strategy.
Current project status and timeline
Construction is expected to resume in late April 2025 and continue through to project completion in September 2025. During this time, the Lucasville Road bridge will be reduced to single-lane, stop-and-go traffic.
Temporary traffic signals will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to maintain access during construction.
Two-lane access will resume upon project completion.
The municipality will provide related traffic impacts through halifax.ca/news.
We thank residents and commuters in advance for their patience and understanding as we complete this critical infrastructure work.
