Lower Water Street AAA Bikeway Upgrades project

Project overview

The Halifax Regional Municipality is upgrading the active transportation infrastructure on Lower Water Street to support safer, more accessible, and connected travel options for all users. The work includes:

  • Bikeway upgrades: A mix of protective barriers and additional flexible bollards will be installed to replace or complement existing painted lines and flexible bollards along the bikeway between Terminal Road and Duke Street.
  • Transit infrastructure upgrades: Four Halifax Transit stops will be upgraded with new concrete pads that improve accessibility and clarify shared space between cyclists and transit users.
  • Sidewalk upgrades: Replacing the brick sidewalk and curb on the west side of Lower Water Street, between Sackville and Prince streets.

These improvements support the goals of the Integrated Mobility Plan (IMP). Once complete, the upgrades will offer additional protection for cyclists, improved streetscaping, and better infrastructure for pedestrians — all while maintaining key vehicle routes.

Current project status

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2025 and is expected to be completed in fall 2025. An update will be communicated once the tender process is complete and a contractor for this project has been selected.

The municipality will provide related traffic impacts through halifax.ca/news.

Construction impacts

Temporary detours will be in place for cyclists during construction.

A pedestrian detour will be in place; however, access to all businesses will be maintained throughout the work.

Halifax Transit routes will detour around this work. When updates are available, they’ll be posted on halifax.ca/htdisruptions.
