Use of e-scooters in the Municipality
In Spring 2022, the Province of Nova Scotia amended the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) to enable the use of electric kick-scooters (e-scooters) on municipal property if a municipality has passed a by-law permitting their use.
A by-law to permit and regulate the use of e-scooters in Halifax will soon be presented to Halifax Regional Council for their consideration.
Until a by-law is adopted by Regional Council, e-scooters fall subject to the Motor Vehicle Act legislation. The municipality plans to bring an approach to bike share and e-scooter share for Regional Council’s consideration in the next several months.
The use of e-scooters may be permitted on private property at the discretion of the property owner. The MVA imposes specific safety obligations for e-scooter operators, including that users must wear helmets and be at least 14 years old. Read the legislation for more information.
