Making Connections: 2014-19 Active Transportation (AT) Priorities Plan proposes priority initiatives to support and increase cycling, walking and rolling in HRM. This plan identifies how the municipality will work to increase the number of residents who choose to walk or bicycle for trips to work, school, shopping, and services. The 2014-29 AT Priorities Plan is an update of the 2006 AT Priorities Plan, both plans shared the following vision:
"Develop a region-wide, visible and connected Active Transportation network of on-road and off-road facilities that are convenient, accommodate the needs of existing and future users and promote an increase in non-motorized vehicle travel, particularly for short distance trips. This network will be supported by various programs, policies and strategies that will help and encourage Active Transportation year-round, and improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors to the area and make HRM one of the most desirable municipalities in which to live, work and visit in North America.”
This is tied to overarching objectives in the Municipal Planning Strategy and the Integrated Mobility Plan, which was informed by the AT Priorities Plan. In 2019, the timeline for the AT Priorities Plan was extended. Updates to the plan are scheduled to begin in 2025. See the plan and the associated maps below:
