The Halifax Regional Municipality honours and recognizes the importance of the Indigenous people (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit) and their cultural contributions to the tapestry of our region. The municipality recognizes the significant contributions of the Indigenous people and actively work together towards reconciliation and ensuring that our Indigenous members continue to enrich the fabric of the Halifax region.
Land Acknowledgement
The Halifax Regional Municipality is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq people. The municipality acknowledges the Peace & Friendship Treaties signed in this Territory and recognizes that we are all Treaty People.
What is a land acknowledgment?
Historically, a land acknowledgment is a traditional practice shared amongst Indigenous groups to recognize the Indigenous land & territory they are visiting. Today a land acknowledgement remains a way to express one’s gratitude to the Mi’kmaw people for being stewards of the land that we live and work on.
Statement of Reconciliation
On December 8th, 2015 the Halifax Regional Council passed a Statement of Reconciliation to support the municipality’s work with Mi’kmaq and Urban Indigenous communities. The municipality is committed to the recommendations outlined in the report put forth by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) and to working with the community to address issues that impact access to municipal services.
