Safe Speeds

There is a direct correlation between vehicle speed and the likelihood of crash occurrence, seriousness of injury and the odds of a fatality.  HRM is working hard to reduce vehicle speeds in residential areas, through initiatives such as the Neighbourhood Speed Limit Reduction program, the Traffic Calming program, and rolling out the implementation of Speed Display Signs.  HRM also shares speed data with Police for targeted enforcement in residential areas.

Physical measures have the most potential for a sustained reduction in vehicle speeds. Obstructions, such as speed tables or curb extensions are installed to force drivers to reduce their speed as they drive through or over them.  Regardless of the posted speed limit, drivers should slow down to safely travel over a speed table or through curb extensions. Physical measures are installed in sequence, so drivers should maintain a lower speed along the corridor.
