Now hiring 2024 Election workers

Are you passionate about democracy and eager to play an important role in your community? The municipality is currently recruiting more than 1,200 election workers to serve in different temporary roles to help ensure a fair, accessible and efficient municipal election this October.  

We’re looking for community members, able to legally work in Canada,  who are detail-oriented, customer-focused, comfortable with technology, problem solvers, team players and multi-taskers.

When are workers needed?

Temporary election workers are needed to support advance voting (Saturday, Oct. 12 and Tuesday, Oct. 15) and election day voting (Saturday, Oct. 19) at voting locations across the municipality’s 16 electoral districts

Applicants who can’t work each day are still encouraged to apply and asked to identify which date(s) they can work. All election workers must attend paid training in advance (multiple training sessions will be available between Sept. 16 and Oct. 12).  

What do election workers do?

There are different roles required to ensure that eligible voters can conveniently exercise their right to vote during advance voting and on election day:

Supervising Deputy Returning Officer
  • Ensures that polls are set up as required and that they open and close promptly at the prescribed time.
  • Ensures that election officers are there on time.
  • Directs the work of election officers in the polling location.
  • Ensures that all candidate material is removed.
  • Supervises the counting of the ballots.
  • Manages the collection and return of ballot boxes.
  • Handles escalated matters in the polling location related to voters/candidates or agents.
  • Ensures ballot boxes/poll books and election material are secure at the polling location and returned by Deputy Returning Officers to the appropriate drop locations.

Rate of pay:

  • $59 for 3-4 hours of training.
  • Advance voting days: $22 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay for hours worked. 
  • Election day: $355 per day (one hour before the opening of the poll, to reporting of all polls/tables at the polling location).
     
Deputy Returning Officer
  • Sets up the poll with the necessary supplies.
  • Ensures that the elector provides satisfactory proof of identity and address before voting.
  • Hands the ballot to the elector and indicates the instructions to follow.
  • Ensures that the poll clerk and candidates’ representatives follow the rules and procedures.
  • Manages the registration process at the polling station.
  • Counts the ballots, signs the related official forms and informs Election Central of the results.
  • Returns the ballot box and related materials to the Returning Officer (RO) or SDRO, as instructed, at the end of voting.

Rate of pay: 

  • $59 for 3-4 hours of training.
  • Advance voting days: $20 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay for hours worked. 
  • Election day: $269 per day (one hour before the opening of the poll, to reporting of all polls/tables at the polling location).
Poll Clerk
  • Assists the deputy returning officer to set up and open the polling station.
  • Assists the deputy returning officer to ensure that voting proceeds in an orderly fashion.
  • Locates the elector’s name on the list of electors and strikes it through.
  • Maintains the Record of Poll.
  • Assists with counting the ballots.

Rate of pay: 

  • $59 for 3-4 hours of training.
  • Advance voting days: $20 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay for hours worked. 
  • Election day: $264 per day (one hour before the opening of the poll, to reporting of all polls/tables at the polling location).
Information Officer
  • Directs electors and candidates’ representatives to the appropriate polling station.
  • Provides electors with information regarding satisfactory proof of identity and address.
  • Consults the street key to determine electors’ polling divisions.
  • Directs the orderly flow of people in the polling location.
  • Ensures that the poll closes at the prescribed time and that electors in the polling location are processed by that time and have exercised their right to vote.

Rate of pay: $264 per day (one hour prior to the opening of the poll, to reporting of the poll at which the Information Officer is working) plus $59 for 3-4 hours of training.

Driver
  • Deliver supplies to (and from) various poll locations during advance polls and on election day.
  • Deliver election materials back to Election Central after the poll locations have closed on election day.
  • Drivers must have a valid driver’s license for the vehicle operated, along with a safe driving record and third party liability and vehicle insurance coverage. 

Rate of pay: $247 per day (one hour prior to the opening of the poll, to reporting of the poll at which the driver is working) plus $59 for 3-4 hours of training.

Polling Location Cleaner
  • Clean commonly used surfaces at polling locations.
  • Clean washrooms at polling locations multiple times a day.

Rate of pay: 

  • $59 for 3-4 hours of training.
  • Advance voting days: $15 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay for hours worked. 
  • Election day: $247 per day (one hour before the opening of the poll, to reporting of all polls/tables at the polling location).
Advance Poll and Election Day Standby Workers
  • Personnel that are trained to replace election and advance polling day workers in the event of an absence. 
  • Standby employees are required for each position.

Rate of pay: $86 per day. If standby workers are assigned a specific position, the individual will be paid at the position rate instead of the standby rate.
