Before planning or participating in outdoor events, it's crucial to assess air quality risks—especially during wildfire risk season. Visit the Government of Canada’s website to learn how coaches, officials and event organizers use the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) to make informed decisions and adapt plans as air conditions change.

Field conditions
Despite rigorous field maintenance activities by municipal staff, the quality and conditions of each field are also impacted by:
- age of the field;
- how field was constructed (e.g., soil structure);
- overuse and/or non-usage; and
- unusual seasonal weather patterns (e.g., a particularly warm or wet season).
Submit an online form to report damage to municipal-owned fields.
Field closures
Field closures occur for various reasons, including:
- inclement weather
- soil saturation
- unforeseen maintenance

Frequently asked questions
- Why is the field closed if the weather is nice?
A field closure may occur if inclement weather, like rain earlier in the day, has impacted field conditions. Even if the weather is currently pleasant, the field may be too soft, and any activity on the field could cause damage.
- Why wasn’t the field lined?
There are various reasons why a field could not be lined, including:
- The field was not booked.
- Based on field classification (some fields are not lined based on their classification - see the above resource on this webpage on field classification for more details)
- Due to inclement weather.
- Due to wet conditions.
- Why wasn’t the grass mowed around the field?
Grass may not be mowed around a field due to:
- inclement weather;
- mechanical breakdown;
- wet conditions; or
- field was in use (e.g., in use by school).
- How does the municipality determine which fields are maintained?
The Halifax Regional Municipality determines the maintenance of fields by the following:
- field bookings
- field classification (see above resource on this webpage for more information)
- service standards
- It looks like a field hasn’t been maintained. What factors could be impacting the field condition other than maintenance?
Municipal staff maintain fields through an extensive maintenance process and schedule that extends all season. However, there are other factors that contribute to field conditions, including:
- age of the field;
- amount of precipitation that has occurred and the amount expected to fall in the future;
- drainage characteristics of the field;
- field classification;
- non-use of the field;
- unusual seasonal weather patterns (e.g., a particularly warm or wet season);
- time of year and the cumulative amount of stress on the field;
- vandalism; and/or
- visual ponding, sponging of water on turf surface.
