District 6 is made up of both busy commercial areas and vibrant residential neighborhoods. It is home to approximately 25,000 residents and a growing, centrally-located urban business park.
The Burnside Industrial Park is the largest business park north of Boston and east of Montreal, and along with the adjacent City of Lakes Business Park, houses nearly 2,000 enterprises and approximately 30,000 employees. The park is conveniently located within 10–15 minutes from downtown Halifax, the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, and the Port of Halifax. Burnside is extensively serviced by the C.N.R. mainline and is home to the largest concentration of truck transportation in Atlantic Canada. The district is also home to Dartmouth Crossing, a unique shopping destination featuring a mix of shops and services, big-box stores, restaurants, and a movie theatre.
The district is home to Shubie Park, a 40-acre urban park long considered the “jewel” of Dartmouth. The Park is a heavily forested greenway, whose beauty is matched only by its historical significance—it is part of the Shubenacadie canal system, named after the Mi’kmaq Nation who used the route as a transportation corridor dating as far back as 4,000 years ago.
Today, Shubie Park offers the only fully serviced campground within city limits, including both serviced and unserviced sites, a playground, tennis court, shower, and laundry services. Canoe and kayak rentals are available from May–October and Shubie Beach offers supervised swimming in the summer months. The trail system within the park is extensive and includes many interpretive panels for users to learn from and enjoy.
The community of Dartmouth is known as the “City of Lakes” and is famous for its long history of both recreational and high-performance paddling and rowing.
The East Dartmouth Community Centre, located in the heart of the district, is a state-of-the-art facility offering programs and services to all ages, abilities, and cultures. It is the permanent home of the Boys and Girls Club of Dartmouth, and offers programming such as badminton, yoga, tai chi, and pickleball.
