Floods are a natural phenomenon and part of living in a coastal and heavy precipitation environment like Nova Scotia. The goal for the municipality is not to completely reduce the chance of any floods happening. Instead, our goal is to build resilience to floods. Some ways we can build resilience include:
- ensuring emergency management organizations have the right tools and resources to prepare and respond to floods;
- preventing further encroachment into floodplain areas;
- having an emergency kit ready and a plan to stay safe in a flood;
- using emergency alerts and communication tools to provide up to date information;
- giving natural systems the space to store, absorb and evaporate water;
- protecting the most vulnerable areas and people;
- reducing the amount of infrastructure in flood prone areas; and
- mobilizing resources after a flood to get back on our feet quickly.
