Charging an EV takes more time than fueling up a vehicle that burns fossil fuels. Because this experience is new to many people, here are some tips for how you can be a considerate EV owner when charging.
EV charging parking spots are for vehicles that are actively charging only, so it’s important to avoid occupying the parking spot when not charging (blocking a charging spot can result in your vehicle being ticketed or towed)
- rather than charging your vehicle until it is full, it will help reduce line-ups and wait times if you unplug and move your vehicle once you have adequate range to comfortably reach your destination
- since most daily commutes can be accomplished by charging at home, please only use charging stations when your vehicle’s battery needs to be topped up
- some older EV models are not able to use the full capacity of fast chargers, so make sure to check the fast-charging speed of your EV and use the charging option most appropriate for your vehicle
- never unplug another person’s vehicle unless you’ve received permission from the owner
- before leaving a station, please ensure that the charging cable is fully retracted back into the cable management system to prevent tripping hazards
- PlugShare allows you to let other EV drivers know that a charger is in use and a useful way to leave feedback on issues with particular chargers (you can also report issues to SWTCH Energy Inc. at 1-844-798-2438 or to the Halifax Regional Municipality at 311)
