The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents to participate in a Historical Photo Scan-a-thon on Sunday, Dec. 10. This is a drop-in event from noon to 4 p.m. at the RBC Room (3rd Floor) of the Halifax Central Library (5440 Spring Garden Road). For more information, visit the Halifax Public Libraries website.
The municipality invites residents to bring photographs, slides or negatives of their neighbourhood to the Scan-a-thon. Archivists will record valuable information about the images, then carefully scan them so residents and researchers will have access to a digital copy. Contributors can either donate the original photograph and keep a digital copy or can donate the digital copy and keep the original.
The donation of these records will preserve the items and make them accessible to the general public to contribute to understanding our past.
The Municipal Archives is the official repository for historical municipal government records from Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and the former County of Halifax – and also holds community records from the region. The Municipal Archives include a guide of buildings and properties, historical Council minutes from 1841 to 1996 and over 4,000 historical images of downtown Halifax before massive renewal projects of the 1960s – and much more.
The Municipal Archives are available for all residents to explore the region’s history. In addition to online services, residents can request an appointment at the Municipal Archives (81 Ilsley Avenue, Unit 11). Archivists are available to respond to your requests on Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Les habitants sont invités à participer au Scan-a-thon de photos historiques
La Municipalité régionale d’Halifax invite les résidents à participer à un Scan-a-thon de photos historiques le dimanche 10 décembre. Il s’agit d’un événement sans rendez-vous qui se tiendra de 12 h à 16 h, dans la salle RBC (3e étage) de la bibliothèque centrale d’Halifax (5440, chemin Spring Garden). La municipalité invite les habitants à apporter des photographies, des diapositives ou des négatifs de leur quartier au Scan-a-thon. Les archivistes enregistrent des données intéressantes sur les images, puis ils les numérisent afin que les résidents et les chercheurs aient accès à une copie numérique. Les contributeurs peuvent soit donner des photos originales et conserver un exemplaire numérique, soit donner des copies numériques et conserver l’original.
Le don de ces photographies permettra de préserver les articles et de les rendre accessibles au grand public, ce qui contribuera à la compréhension du passé.
Les Archives municipales sont le dépôt officiel des données historiques du gouvernement municipal de Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford et de l’ancien comté de Halifax. Elles conservent également les données des collectivités de la région.
