February is African Heritage Month. This year's provincial theme, "Our Smiles, Our Joy, Our Resilience as African Nova Scotians," encapsulates the enduring spirit and resilience demonstrated by people of African descent throughout the centuries in our province. Our smiles tell stories, share our joy, and symbolize our resilience. As we celebrate our heritage and culture, we also align with the final year of the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent (DPAD) 2015-2024, aiming to strengthen global cooperation and increase awareness for people of African descent.
Nova Scotia boasts 52 historic African Nova Scotian communities, each with a profound and complex history spanning over two centuries. African Heritage Month provides a special opportunity to celebrate the culture, legacy, achievements, and contributions of our people, both past and present.

African Heritage Month Opening Night
In partnership with the Halifax Public Libraries and the Black History Month Association, the Office of Diversity & Inclusion/ANSAIO welcomes employees and residents to kick-off African Heritage Month at the Paul O’Regan Hall. Enjoy musical performances by Owen “O Sound” Lee and Jupiter Reign.

Flag Raising
Attend an African Heritage Month flag raising at Grande Parade before moving indoors to Halifax Hall for a proclamation reading by Mayor Savage.

Other Events
Residents are also encouraged to take part in other events throughout the municipality celebrating African Heritage Month:
- City Hall will be illuminated in black, green, and red in honour of African Heritage Month, from January 25 to February 1 and February 11 to 17.
- Throughout February, the Downtown Halifax Business Commission will project light displays on the former Halifax Memorial Library Building at Grafton Park in celebration of African Heritage Month.
- The Pan-African flag will be displayed at both the Burnside and Ragged Lake Transit Centres, as the weather permits, in honour of African Heritage Month.
- Explore the African Heritage Month virtual portal, featuring programs that celebrate the African Nova Scotian community.

Célébration du Mois du patrimoine africain 2024
Le mardi 23 janvier 2024 (Halifax, Nouvelle-Écosse) – Février est le Mois du patrimoine africain. Le thème provincial de cette année est « Nos sourires, notre joie, notre résilience en tant qu’Afro-Néo-Écossais », qui englobe l’esprit durable et la résilience dont font ont fait les personnes d’ascendance africaine dans notre province au travers des siècles. Nos sourires racontent des histoires, partagent notre joie et symbolisent notre résilience. Alors que nous célébrons notre patrimoine et notre culture, nous nous concordons aussi avec la dernière année de la Décennie internationale des personnes d’ascendance africaine des Nations Unies (DIPAA) qui s’est écoulée de 2015 à 2024 dans le but de renforcer la coopération internationale et d’augmenter la sensibilisation à l’égard des personnes d’ascendance africaine.
La Nouvelle-Écosse compte 52 communautés afro-néo-écossaises historiques possédant chacune une profonde et complexe histoire s’écoulant sur plus de deux centenaires. Le mois du patrimoine africain offre l’occasion spéciale de célébrer la culture, l’héritage, les réalisations et les contributions de notre, anciens comme actuels.

Soirée d’ouverture du Mois du patrimoine africain
En partenariat avec les bibliothèques publiques d’Halifax et la Black History Month Association, le Bureau de la diversité et de l’inclusion/BIANEA invite les employés et les résidents à lancer le Mois du patrimoine africain au Paul O’Regan Hall. Profitez des prestations musicales de Owen « O Sound » Lee et de Jupiter Reign.

Levée du drapeau
Assistez à la levée du drapeau du Mois du patrimoine africain à Grand Parade avant de vous rendre à l’hôtel de ville d’Halifax pour la lecture de la proclamation par le maire Savage.

Autres activités
Les résidents sont également encouragés à participer à d’autres événements célébrant le Mois du patrimoine africain organisés à travers la municipalité :
- L’hôtel de ville sera illuminé en noir, vert et rouge en l’honneur du Mois du Patrimoine africain, du 25 janvier au 1er février, ainsi que du 11 au 17 février.
- Tout au long du mois de février, la Downtown Halifax Business Commission projettera un spectacle de lumières sur l’ancien bâtiment de la bibliothèque Halifax Memorial, au parc Grafton, pour célébrer le Mois du patrimoine africain.
- Le drapeau panafricain sera hissé aux Centres de transport en commun de Burnside et de Ragged Lake, lorsque les conditions météorologiques le permettront, en l’honneur du Mois du patrimoine africain.
