Halifax Regional Police issued 79 summary offence tickets to drivers for traffic violations that occurred throughout the region over a three-day period.

Since Wednesday, HRP’s Traffic Unit was monitoring traffic with a focus on speeding and distracted driving violations. Officers issued 28 summary offence tickets to drivers for speeding and 22 tickets to drivers for using their cell phones while driving. Officers also issued 27 tickets for other offences including no insurance, failed vehicle inspections and expired plates.

Two additional drivers were charged with stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit. In addition, the drivers were suspended from driving for seven days and the vehicles they were driving were seized and will be impounded for seven days. The fine in Nova Scotia for stunting is $2,422.50 and six points are assigned to the driver’s record.

In a continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on speed enforcement and distracted driving. We all have a role to play to help keep our roads safe.

If you see someone driving dangerously, call 911 when it is safe to do so. Give the call taker your location along with information about the vehicle, direction of travel and description of the driver.
