Investigators in the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division have charged a man with first-degree murder in relation to the homicide of Anthony Charles Johnson earlier this year in Halifax.
At 11:30 p.m. on January 26, 2020, Halifax Regional Police responded to the area of Connaught and Chisholm Avenues in Halifax to a report of a man who had been shot. Officers located Anthony Charles Johnson, 31, of Halifax, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he remained until he passed away on February 6. Anthony’s death was deemed a homicide by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service.
Investigators travelled to Toronto, Ontario, and with the assistance of members of Toronto Police Service, arrested Shondell James Ogden, 30, yesterday at the Toronto South Detention Center, 106 Horner Avenue. Ogden was brought back to Nova Scotia yesterday and is expected to answer to the first-degree murder charge through the court process today.
We hope that these charges bring some measure of comfort to Anthony’s family and our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.
The investigation into Anthony’s murder is ongoing. Investigators are continuing to ask anyone who may have information to call police at 902-490-5020. Ogden has also been charged with kidnapping and conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of kidnapping in relation to a separate incident. On January 22 police received a report that earlier in the day a 32-year-old woman had been kidnapped from a location on Romans Avenue in Halifax. She was released later that same day and did not suffer any physical injuries. Police believe this was not a random incident.
Two other men were also charged in relation to the kidnapping:
- Justin Gregory Miller, 39, of Dartmouth, was charged with kidnapping with a firearm, conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of kidnapping and unlawful confinement. He appeared in court on March 17.
- Paul Raymond Howe, 33, of Halifax, was charged with kidnapping with a firearm and conspiracy to commit the indictable offence of kidnapping. He appeared in court on March 19.
