The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following update regarding the structure fire at an apartment building at 119 Hanwell Drive, Middle Sackville.
There are 64 units in the apartment building, with approximately 180 residents. The municipality can confirm that no one was injured as a result of the fire. As well, due to the swift response by Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE), the fire was prevented from spreading to an adjacent building.
Evacuation centre
On Monday, Sept. 15, an evacuation centre was opened at the Springfield Lake Recreation Centre, 266 Lakeview Avenue, Middle Sackville, to assist any residents impacted by the fire. The Red Cross have been conducting in-person registrations and as of 9 a.m. today, families from 61 of the 64 units in the apartment building had registered. Of the 61 units registered, there is a total of 139 residents.
There are currently no residents at the evacuation centre; however, it reopened today at 8 a.m. and will remain open until 3 p.m. This is the last day the evacuation centre will be open so anyone who has not yet registered is strongly encouraged to do so.
Any residents experiencing difficulty securing short-term accommodations are encouraged to contact the Red Cross through the evacuation centre for assistance.
Status of the building & fire investigation
Yesterday, HRFE met with the building owner and a construction company to discuss next steps and arranged for an excavator to open up the building in key areas to confirm the fire was extinguished.
This was completed by 3 p.m. and fire operations were concluded. HRFE has released the property to the building owner.
HRFE members were also available throughout the day to assist residents with recovering their possessions, where it was safe to do so.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation and there is currently no estimated timeline for when the investigation will be complete. HRFE Fire Investigators will work with the property’s insurance company and their fire investigator to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
Halifax Transit operations
As fire operations have concluded, routes 83/183 have returned to regular service.
Donations
The Encounter Church of the Salvation Army is collecting donations for those impacted by the fire. This includes:
- bottled water and other hydration products
- shelf-stable (non-perishable) food
- new clothing
- hygiene products
Donations can be dropped off at 51 Metropolitan Ave, Lower Sackville, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please note that furniture donations cannot be accepted at this time.

Mise à jour – Incendie de structure à Middle Sackville – 17 septembre, 12 h
La Municipalité régionale de Halifax informe les résidents de la mise à jour suivante concernant l’incendie de structure survenu dans un immeuble d’appartements situé au 119, promenade Hanwell, à Middle Sackville.
L’immeuble compte 64 logements, abritant environ 180 résidents. La municipalité confirme qu’aucune blessure n’a été signalée à la suite de l’incendie. De plus, grâce à l’intervention rapide de Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE), le feu a été empêché de se propager à un bâtiment adjacent.
Centre d’évacuation
Le lundi 15 septembre, un centre d’évacuation a été ouvert au Springfield Lake Recreation Centre, 266, avenue Lakeview, Middle Sackville, pour aider les résidents touchés par l’incendie. La Croix-Rouge a procédé à des inscriptions en personne et, à 9 h ce matin, des familles provenant de 61 des 64 logements de l’immeuble s’étaient inscrites, représentant un total de 139 résidents.
Il n’y a actuellement aucun résident au centre d’évacuation ; toutefois, celui-ci a rouvert aujourd’hui à 8 h et restera ouvert jusqu’à 15 h. C’est la dernière journée d’ouverture, et toute personne qui ne s’est pas encore inscrite est fortement encouragée à le faire.
Les résidents ayant des difficultés à trouver un hébergement temporaire sont invités à contacter la Croix-Rouge par l’intermédiaire du centre d’évacuation pour obtenir de l’aide.
État du bâtiment et enquête sur l’incendie
Hier, HRFE a rencontré le propriétaire de l’immeuble et une entreprise de construction pour discuter des prochaines étapes et a organisé l’intervention d’une pelle mécanique afin d’ouvrir certaines zones clés du bâtiment pour confirmer que le feu était complètement éteint.
Cette opération a été terminée à 15 h et les opérations d’extinction ont pris fin. HRFE a remis la propriété au propriétaire de l’immeuble.
Des membres de HRFE sont également restés disponibles toute la journée pour aider les résidents à récupérer leurs biens, lorsque cela pouvait se faire en toute sécurité.
La cause de l’incendie est toujours à l’étude et aucun délai n’est actuellement prévu pour la fin de l’enquête. Les enquêteurs en incendie de HRFE travailleront avec la compagnie d’assurance de la propriété et son enquêteur pour déterminer l’origine et la cause du sinistre.
Service de Halifax Transit
Les opérations d’extinction étant terminées, les trajets 83/183 ont repris leur service normal.
Dons
L’Encounter Church de l’Armée du Salut recueille des dons pour les personnes touchées par l’incendie. Les articles recherchés comprennent :
- bouteilles d’eau et autres boissons hydratantes
- aliments non périssables
- vêtements neufs
- produits d’hygiène
Les dons peuvent être déposés au 51, avenue Metropolitan, Lower Sackville, du lundi au vendredi, de 9 h à 16 h. Veuillez noter que les dons de meubles ne peuvent pas être acceptés pour le moment.
