The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe an off-duty Halifax Regional Police (HRP) officer committed an offence in relation to a motor vehicle collision that occurred in Porters Lake, Nova Scotia.
On the afternoon of January 24, 2025, RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision on Myra Road in Porters Lake. An adult male was parked on the side of the road and was out of his vehicle and partially on the road, tending to a passenger in the backseat when he was struck and seriously injured by a vehicle driving by. That vehicle was being driven by an off-duty HRP officer. The male sustained serious injuries to his leg, pelvis, and head, and was transported to hospital by Life Flight. The officer did not sustain any serious physical injuries and it was confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
SiRT was contacted the same day and started its investigation immediately.
A detailed copy of the Director’s summary report is available online: 2025-0009-Directors-Summary-of-Investigation-68516abc7c89a.pdf .
SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
